Endoscopic surgery is a minimally invasive technique used by surgeons to gain a direct view of a patient’s internal organs and systems.
It involves using a thin, flexible tube with a light and camera at the tip. The endoscopic tube is either inserted through a natural opening in the body, like the mouth, or a small incision in the skin.
A colonoscopy is an endoscopic surgery whereby a colonoscope is inserted into a patient’s rectum and through the anus, allowing the surgeon to view the inside of the large bowel. This endoscopic procedure is commonly used as a tool to identify and prevent bowel cancer.
A gastroscopy procedure is used by surgeons to view the upper digestive tract. An endoscopic tube is inserted through the mouth, down the oesophagus, and into the small intestine (duodenum). This allows the surgeon to view these areas and diagnose possible issues the patient may be having. Gastroscopic procedures may be done if patients are experiencing indigestion, nausea, or difficulty swallowing.
