Providing a comprehensive and reliable multidisciplinary team, dedicated to patient outcomes is a core focus of Dr Whiting’s practice. We know that weight loss surgery is much more than just the surgery and therefore engagement with our multidisciplinary team is vital to ensure weight loss and health outcomes well into the future.

Dr Scott Whiting

Upper GI, Bariatric & General Surgeon

Dr Whiting was born and bred in Townsville, where he played first grade NRL for the North Queensland Cowboys before undertaking his medical studies.

Dr Whiting studied medicine at the University of Notre Dame in Fremantle, Western Australia where he graduated with Honours and the Dean’s Commendation. He continued his specialist training in New Zealand and the United Kingdom before returning to Townsville and operating as North Queensland’s only sub-specialty trained Upper GI and Bariatric Surgeon.

Outside of work Scott enjoys spending time with his family and young kids.

Dr Whiting has been recognised with fellowships in Bariatrics (ANZMOSS) and minimally invasive Upper GI surgery (ANZGOSA) due to his studies and training as a bariatric specialist.

Melissa Whiting

Dietitian

Melissa Whiting is an Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) and member of Dietitians Australia (DA).

Melissa graduated from the University of the Sunshine Coast with a Bachelor of Nutrition & Dietetics (Hons) and has worked both nationally and internationally as a clinical dietitian.
Melissa has a particular interest in Metabolic and Bariatric surgery and has significant experience in this area. She is also a member of the Australian and New Zealand Metabolic and Obesity Surgery Society (ANZMOSS) and regularly attends conferences, scientific meetings, DA led bariatric interest groups and courses in bariatrics, psychology and weight management.

Melissa is currently the Australian dietitian representative on the ANZMOSS board and convenor of the 2024 ANZMOSS Integrated Health professional development course.

Melissa works alongside the surgeons and the wider multidisciplinary team at North Qld Minimally Invasive Surgery.

Jess Worrall

Dietitian

Jess Worrall is an Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD) with a wealth of experience in various aspects of dietetics.

Jess graduated from the University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Exercise and Nutrition Science and a Masters in Dietetic Studies. She has spent the last six years working in a variety of areas across dietetics, including Metabolic and Bariatric surgery.

Jess is trained in the management of chronic disease, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy – eating disorders (ED), and is an Accredited Sports Dietitian. She also has significant experience in working with the Australian Defence Force and Veteran community helping people with various disabilities.

Jess is a caring and supportive clinician who understands that nutrition is about more than just what you eat. She is passionate about health and promoting a healthy lifestyle.

Ursula Togiailua

Nurse Practitioner

Ursula is our Nurse Practitioner, qualified in Chronic Disease Management and specialises in Diabetes and Endocrine with Obesity and Bariatrics.

Ursula is dedicated to supporting both patients and our wider team in making the pre and post-operative journey as safe and manageable as possible. This may be as simple as reviewing medications, health advice and support for weight loss journeys with medication support or a review of your weight journey later down the track.

She enjoys working alongside our patients, discussing and planning their weight management journey to help achieve long-term outcomes, working both publicly and privately in these roles and is happy to see anyone at any time.
